So, what is type 2 diabetes anyway? Here you will learn the causes of type 2 diabetes (diabetes mellitus type 2), why it accounts for 90 percent of diabetes developed today and why it is the most preventable form.
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is linked to lack of physical activity and obesity and is a very common and deadly disease. It has also been associated with older age, most often in people over 35. Ethnicity and race play a part as well with blacks, hispanics, Asia-Pacific Islanders and American Indians being diagnosed more often.
People who develop type 2 diabetes make up over 90% of all people developing diabetes today… and this form of the disease is the most preventable… BUT, because of the rapid rise of obesity in the world, it is also on the rise. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is even calling it an epidemic.
Diabetes mellitus type 2 normally takes years or even decades to develop, but it is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputations… and up to 80% of diabetics will die of heart disease. This was true in 1970 and it’s still true today. This disease is deadly and not something to play around with.
Here’s another scary thing… this disease has always been known as an adult disease… but now, again because of rising obesity, more and more children are being diagnosed.
How about this statistic… the CDC says that 33% of children born in America today are expected to develop type 2 diabetes … for black and hispanic children, that number jumps to 50%!
Any good news out there?
I’ve done a lot of reading recently and many doctors are talking about how to control type 2 diabetes… and the CDC and the American Diabetes Association say that type 2 diabetes is preventable and controllable. That’s good news, and this site will help you do both.
